COMMUNITY Allotment

Amid the Coronavirus crises, ‘Community Allotment’ created a new space to connect communities by providing outdoor activities at an allotment site on Victoria Park giving residents some much needed breathing space in the fresh air and an opportunity for residents to get involved and develop a sense of community as well as getting involved in soft exercises; learn to eat healthily, help environment; keep active; and develop intergeneration connections. Furthermore, the project provides opportunities for local residents to learn new gardening skills, grow fruits and vegetables, meet new people, and give back to nature in a Covid safe environment. In terms of physical health, we have noted that on top of the exercise involved in growing, people were also able to get their five-a-day fruit and vegetables. With regards to mental health the community benefits from a place which is relaxing- a nice way to get away from stress. Case study by CO-OP Foundation. The Community Allotment project is planned and coordinated by Suzanne Hartwell, the Community Support Officer based at the Jubilee Park Community Centre.
